Small tips for quick FPS improvements

Before we start to change files and config files, we'll show you little tricks on how you can get a few FPS out. At this point we are already assuming that you have updated all of your drivers. For example, owners of Nvidia graphics cards should open Nvidia Experience and look for new drivers.

Deactivating the Steam overlay in the game can also work wonders. To do this, open the Steam settings and then select the In-Game tab. Deactivate the checkmark for the steam overlay in SCUM here.

Of course, you should also use the game's graphics settings and turn SCUM down here if the game stutters for you. If you want to see success quickly, adjust the graphics presetting. If you set the texture quality, dynamic shadow quality and the visibility lower, that can already have a lot. However, some options are not displayed in the in-game settings, which is why we have to look at the SCUM config file in the next section.

Lock FPS and turn off Depth of Field - in the config file

The first thing to do is to find the config file so that we can write around in it. There are several ways to do this - and of course it depends on your Windows version. We were only able to test the options in Windows 10.

To the right of the Windows Start logo you can do a text search. Enter% appdata% here. As soon as the roaming folder opens, you press back to get to the folder in front of it. From here you go in the folder structure as follows: Local, Scum, Saved, Config, WindowsNoEditor.

Simply go to the folder manually by opening Explorer and then navigating to the hard drive on which you have installed SCUM. Then Users, <your user>, AppData, Local, Scum, Saved, Config, WindowsNoEditor.

If you can't see the% appdata% folder, just click on View in Explorer and check the option Hidden Items.

You have to scribble around in this file.

At the end you have to open the GameUserSettings file. You can either do this with the standard editor or with additional programs such as Notepad ++ or Atom.

We recommend that you copy this file and then store it in a different location, such as the desktop. If something goes wrong, you can simply replace this file with the changed one.

In this file you can make two important changes:

Searches for the line r.DepthOfFieldQuality and changes the number to a 0. That determines the range of vision from you in the game. A 0 turns off the blur effect that you can see in the distance. That saves FPS.

You can limit the FPS under FrameRateLimit. If you have a 60 Hz monitor, there should be a "60" in front of the point. But if you have a powerful PC, you can also enter "999" so that there should be no limit.

If you then change the graphics settings in the game, it can happen that these values are reset again. If these values are not in the file, you have to open SCUM, then go to the settings and change the graphic presets, then use them and finally switch back to your preferred version. If you now open the GameUserSettings, all available graphics options should be listed.

Customize Steam startup options and get more performance out of it

Next, let's look at the launch options on Steam. Here you can enter manual values that will take effect as soon as you start SCUM. To do this, right click on SCUM in your library and navigate to the settings. You will find the Start options button directly under the General tab
